In 1972 a group of local ranchers got together and came up with the funds to build the Huerfano County Fairgrounds and the first board was formed. Up until that time, the general exhibits were shown at the La Veta Methodist Church. Today, the 4-H/FFA program is still one of the largest youth organizations
within Huerfano County.
The Huerfano County Fair Board has two main functions. Our first responsibility is to put on the five day Huerfano County Fair, which is held during the second week in August each year. The fair is for all 4-H and FFA youth, countywide, ages 8-18. There is a large variety of projects that range from baking to beef. These programs teach the children who are enrolled in either 4-H or FFA responsibility, money management, profit and loss, leadership skills, and the value of hard work and dedication. The county
fair is a busy week for all the kids and their families, showing off their indoor projects and animals and all the skills they’ve learned throughout the year. Fair ends on Sunday with a Buyers dinner and
Livestock Auction. It’s always wonderful to see families, friends and community members come together for a great cause.
Our second responsibility is the care, maintenance, and improvements of the fairground facilities. The building is getting older and does require some upkeep. Four years ago we started a project to replace four of the five large sliding barn doors for the indoor arena with safer, more efficient doors and to
install new garage doors on the hog barn. Last year with the help of a grant we were able to upgrade our bathrooms at the facility with new ADA compliant ones, and this upcoming year we would like to remodel our kitchen area to make it ADA accessible and more efficient.
